We always feel a bit left out of the pancake day celebrations, which just isn’t right. In terms of foodie wonder holidays it comes a close second to Christmas.
WHY should we not be able to stuff ourselves full of a thousand pancakes once a year, we ask you! Well we should, and that’s why we’ve found you five awesome places to get your gluten free pancake fix – sweet or savoury. Go forth, and pancake day away!
Nama Foods (Raw Food Café), Notting Hill W11
This raw food café has been causing a stir, even amongst those who aren’t raw enthusiasts! Try their gluten free walnut pancakes, topped with banana ‘ice cream’ (made with frozen banana), maple syrup and star anise almond crumble. The Nama pancakes are vegan, dairy and gluten free. Win win.
Creperie Du Monde, Clapton E5
All crepes at Clapton’s Creperie du Monde can be made with buckwheat flour as well as ordinary flour. The fillings are creative and unusual (in a good way!) We love the smoked salmon and hollandaise crepes for brunch, but for pudding the only way to go is the outrageously decadent NEw York Crepe with Oreo, nuts, cream and butterscotch.
Shutterbug, Shoreditch EC2A
For a great atmosphere and even greater pancakes head on down to Shutterbug. They’ve got cocktails, and gluten free pancakes made from buckwheat flour. You can even build your own pancakes with their DIY toppings. Shrove Tuesday show-stoppers guaranteed.
My Old Dutch, Holborn (and other London locations – click here)
My Old Dutch caters for gluten haters at all of their London cafes. Just ask for the special flour blend, it’s a mix of rice, tapioca, buckwheat, maize and potato. They can do gluten free versions of large savoury, sweet, breakfast, kids and lite pancakes. We’ll see you there.
Senzala Creperie, Brixton SW9
South Londoners rejoice! There’s a gluten free galette place in Brixton and it’s amazing! All the galettes (that’s a French savoury pancake) are made out of buckwheat flour, so they’re naturally gluten free and so delicious. Try the Dujhan with Garlic mushrooms, caramelised onions, asparagus, sundried tomatoes, rocket and spinach drizzled with Maple & Mustard dressing. Yum.
