We’ve been on a little gluten free holiday! The past two weeks were spent in sunny Mexico, staying at the Occidental Grand Xcaret Resort in Riviera Maya (near Playa del Carmen, about an hour from Cancun).
It’s an all inclusive resort, which can be a bit of a nightmare for allergic folk… but we’re pleased to report the staff here were AMAZING and provided plenty of gluten free food for us, so much in fact that we seem to have returned a bit podgy.
We contacted the hotel prior to arrival to let them know we’d need gluten free food, they were very accommodating and said it wouldn’t be a problem, and they’d let the relevant teams know. We didn’t hold our breath, though.
Then, when we checked in we were presented with THIS:
Gluten free cakes, or ‘sin gluten’ as they say in Mexico! Things were looking up! Not only that, the receptionist gave us a letter written in Spanish explaining our dietary requirements, so that when dining at the buffet we could give this to the waiters and they could show us what was suitable and what was not.
The hotel has 11 different restaurants, some are buffets but most are a la carte (Mediterranean, Oriental, Italian, Seafood and so on). In the a la carte restaurants the waiters all spoke great English and were very knowledgeable, in fact on several occasions we were provided with gluten free bread without even having to ask for it… apparently word had got around!
The Occidental Grand Xcaret Resort also provides a more luxurious all-inclusive experience within it – the Royal Club. This is a sort of VIP section with a fancy restaurant and waiter service by the pool, we spent three days here and enjoyed bountiful gluten free treats whilst there. At breakfast every day we were served gluten free bread and mini chocolate muffins, and we also got gluten free bread and separate butter at lunch and dinner, as well as slightly modified meals which were gluten free.
On the final night we were served a special Mexican meal – everything was naturally gluten free, and very tasty!
We’ve never received as good gluten free food at an all inclusive resort anywhere, so if you’re on the hunt for some sun take a look here.
P.s. The hotel was also the setting for Mel B’s X Factor Judge’s Houses, where Scary Spice crushed many dreams against a lovely backdrop of the Caribbean sea. Probably a good enough reason to visit in itself.
