The culinary adventures of some gluten hating girl in London
Tanner & Co is a brand spanking new Bermondsey restaurant which replaces what once was Delfina.
They’ve gone for a school theme in a big (and I mean massive) way. The interior is part classroom, part school gym – but a very upmarket type of school, you understand. There are textbooks, anatomy diagrams, typewriters and pommel horses littered about the place. Wooden ladders are conveniently mounted on the walls, creating the perfect escape route for disastrous first dates and dull business lunches. They really have thought of everything.
The menu seems to be based around the ever popular idea of British comfort food with some sort of modern, trendy twist. The fishcakes are actually a singular giant globe of fishcake (it really is the size of a small planet), the spam fritters are in fact ham hock (which is more of a blatent lie). You get the idea.
And it goes without saying that everything is served in those enamel plates with the blue rims. Because no London restaurant would be seen dead without a plethora of matching distressed enamel tableware.
Despite the slightly over the top attempts to be cooler than cool, though, Tanner & Co isn’t half bad. The food is a little too tongue in cheek, perhaps, but taste wise I couldn’t find much to complain about. A hot smoked salmon salad with new potatoes and horseradish creme fraiche was delicious (and gluten free), chips with salt and vinegar salt were unusual and perfectly good and the faux spam fritters went down a treat.
The Verdict: Head back to school and give it a try.
