The culinary adventures of some gluten hating girl in London
Wahaca is the creation of Masterchef winner Thomasina Myers, who is not a Mexican. She hasn’t yet noticed, and in the meantime has been busy opening a chain of Mexican restaurants across London.
A summer addition to the Wahaca chain, The Southbank Experiment is a trailer and pop-up restaurant made bizarrely of shipping containers. Despite this the inside of the ‘restaurant’ is relatively comfortable, with a great atmosphere that comes from being jam-packed with people drinking tequila, I think.
The experiment is testing specials each month, with the most popular being added to the Wahaca menus.
We started with a couple of the cocktails, all of which are tequila based. This is a passionfruit margarita and mojito, both of which were surprisingly good and pretty damn strong too.
The menu is all about Mexican street food. On our visit we sampled a selection of the smaller plates, pork pilbil tacos, chicken taquitos, chorizo & potato quesadillas and a pot of nachos with fresh tomato salsa.
We couldn’t manage any desserts but a drunken American girl reliably informed me the churros were ‘vehhhry good’.
The experiment is only open for 18 months, so if you don’t want to miss out on the chance to eat tacos in a giant tin shoebox – get down there!
Gluten Free? Very. Ask a waiter and they’ll just cross out everything gluten-ish with a big old pen so you can’t go wrong.
The Verdict: Wahaca has been granted the accolade: best cheap night out in London and I’d definitely agree. Our bill came to around £30 which is a steal for a meal on the Southbank with cocktails! The atmosphere is great and the tequila bar upstairs is lovely place to chill out after dinner. Top marks.
